Winter Preparation and Policy

Lancaster, Ohio, November 15 -- Fairfield County Engineer, Frank Anderson, reminds residents that unstable mailbox supports along County Roads should be replaced or repaired before the ground freezes.

Standard mailbox supports are a 4'x4' timber post, a 4 1/2" round timber post, or a maximum 2" I.D. standard strength steel pipe (2 3/8" O.D.). All supports for rural mailboxes must be of the breakaway type. The face of the mailbox shall be a minimum of 30 inches from the edge of pavement.

Anderson makes the following suggestions to protect private property from salt, slush, stones, cinders, and other materials thrown by the snow plow blade:

1). Vehicles or equipment should be parked at least 30' back from the edge of pavement.

2). Valuable plantings should be removed from the road right-of-way.

3). Bags of garbage should not be placed by the edge of pavement.

4). Snow should not be pushed out of driveways into the highway.

Snowplow blades can be damaged by striking the edge of concrete driveways. Concrete should not extend into the right-of-way on a County Road without prior permit approval. Driveways of concrete should end at least 6' from the edge of the road pavement.
